These dogs look like St Bernards. We had one in So Africa it drooled & our yard looked like a cow pasteur. They are very sweet
& gentle. I think they'd do better in a cool climate. My sons girlfriend has a Swiss Mt dog in So Ca. They love him his name is Bear. I think they're expensive if you get a puppy from a breeder.
They do have rescue dogs cheaper but their adults

I live in Charleston, SC and it gets HOT here! My Swissy isn't a fan of the heat, but what dog is. He does fine though. During the summer months I walk him in the morning or in the evening when it is cooler and during the hottest part of the day he lays around the house in the AC and is perfectly happy! The only thing that would be cruel would be to leave them locked outside in the heat all day. So I wouldn't let the heat scare you away from getting one. They are amazing dogs!

I've been researching the perfect dog for me for a considerable amount of time now. All signs seem to point to the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog. I feel I could really enjoy befriending one of these dogs and that I could offer it everything it needs. The only concern I have is that everything I've read very clearly says it's a cold weather breed. Would somewhere like Austin, TX be just cruel to have it or would I need to just monitor hydration more so? Thanks for any help.

You state "A study has discovered that the gene that develops epilepsy is carried by 98% of these dogs." Could you please specifically site where you obtained this information? What study? I have been involved with the GSMD for many years and have never seen a study stating this percentage. From my knowledge the only specific epilepsy DNA study that is being conducted is at the University of Missouri. At this time I do not believe a specific "epilepsy" gene has been identified. I would be very interested to see where you found your information. Thanks!
