Health Issues of a Great Swiss Mountain Dog…

D Dog Fan | April 7th, 2008

The Great Swiss Montain Dog is a generally healthy breed. Some health problems to look out for in this breed are: Hip Dysplasia, Epilepsy, eye problems and bloating. Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs can be particularly susceptible to bloating due to their deep chests, so don’t feed them too much at once, and get tehm to be active right after a meal. Take care of your beloved GSMD and take him or her to the vet for regular check-ups, since prevention is better than cure!

  1. I’ve been researching the perfect dog for me for a considerable amount of time now. All signs seem to point to the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog. I feel I could really enjoy befriending one of these dogs and that I could offer it everything it needs. The only concern I have is that everything I’ve read very clearly says it’s a cold weather breed. Would somewhere like Austin, TX be just cruel to have it or would I need to just monitor hydration more so? Thanks for any help.

  2. I live in Charleston, SC and it gets HOT here! My Swissy isn’t a fan of the heat, but what dog is. He does fine though. During the summer months I walk him in the morning or in the evening when it is cooler and during the hottest part of the day he lays around the house in the AC and is perfectly happy! The only thing that would be cruel would be to leave them locked outside in the heat all day. So I wouldn’t let the heat scare you away from getting one. They are amazing dogs!
